Reno Softball/Baseball Preview

Softball

Head Coach: Brian La Torre, 1st Season as Varsity HC at Reno

Last season’s record: 4-26 Overall, 2-14 League. Ninth in Northern 5A.

Key Losses: Tannis Jackin, Sophia Pardue and Aspen Flanigan-Mumm.

Overview: When the Huskies begin their season they will do so with their third coach in three seasons. With how competitive softball is in Northern Nevada that does not trend well for the Ladies of Booth Street. One of the best things that can be looked at in our area is consistency in coaches on the diamond (be it softball or baseball). Without consistency it’s hard to develop a sustainable program and I believe that this will cause the Huskies to struggle this season. They lose a ton of talent from last year’s squad including Tannis Jackin (now at Boston College) and star pitcher Sophia Pardue. How this team responds to a tough start to their league schedule will dictate their trajectory this season. Good Luck Huskies.

Baseball

Head Coach: Pete Savage, 30th Season as Varsity HC at Reno HS.

Last season’s record: 20-10 Overall, 11-5 League. Fifth in League/Regionals.

Key Losses: Lukas Porter, Jack Helmholz, Lucas DaForno, Hagan Carpenter, and Zach Mills

Overview: A year after rolling through the Northern Regional League and Playoff Championships and two years away from being Nationally ranked the Huskies finished last season in a rare spot – fifth place in the league, and they did not make it to the regional semi-finals. Do not fear Huskies fans as the Boys of Booth Street have quietly reloaded once again for this coming season. Coach Savage and his team will roll out a great blend of hitting, defense and pitching this season led by some top tier talent in Harvey Smerdon and Mack Edwards. Not just a ‘Two Man Wolf Pack’ this Huskies squad is deep, and they expect to have contributors from the class of ’24 all the way through the class of ’27 this season. Coach Savage is currently sitting at 821 career wins (47th nationally amongst active coaches) as we enter this season, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him closing in on 850 by the time the season ends.

What can we expect from your team this season?

Offense – Balance of Power and Speed.

Defense – Efficient, Competitive at Each Position.

Pitching – Good Balance of LHP and RHP. Good.

Returning starters for the 2024 season – 6, all six as position players and five pitchers.

What is the key to growing/maintaining your program? Consistency of Practice, Commitment, and Work Ethic.
